  • Re: Mass balance/chlorides/Wastewater Plant

    Updated: 2011-09-30 18:19:30
ppm is just parts per million - if you have a chloride concentration of 12000 ppm, that means you have 12000 grams of chloride in every 1,000,000 grams of water. With that ratio and the total amount of incoming water (160,000 gal/day) you should be able to calculate how much additional water it would take to get down to 8000ppm and then 6500 ppm.

  • Mass balance/chlorides/Wastewater Plant

    Updated: 2011-09-30 17:58:29
Hello,I am trying to find the mass balance and/or the amount of dilution water we are using in our WWT plants (in regards to chlorides). I have an average 12000 ppm of chloride (daily) in a slurry solution coming into a dewatering plant from there it goes into the EQ tank of WWt @ 8000 ppm and leaves the plant @ 6500 ppm. the plant processes about 160,000 gal a day. What is the equation to figure this out, do I need more information, for the answers will I have to back engineer the equation? Any help would be appreciated.ThanksWill216

  • Rapid Prototyping Tool Can Be Used for Microfluidic MEMS

    Updated: 2011-09-30 00:02:26
Resonetics has introduced the RapidX250 laser micromachining system, developed for universities and corporate research to fabricate microfluidic MEMS and medical devices in a rapid prototype fashion. Traditionally MEMS devices are fabricated by semiconductor lithography. The Rapidx250 uses a multiwavelength excimer laser (193 nm and 248 nm) to directly fabricate the structures in a single step. The laser [...]

  • Fulminate- Noun or Verb?

    Updated: 2011-09-18 20:44:08
I think it is fair to say that most chemists are familiar with the fact that mercury fulminate, Hg(CNO)2, is a pressure sensitive explosive material. But because only a few of us actually handle such materials, myself not included, thankfully, the history and actual boundaries of safe handling practice are probably somewhat indistinct. Mercury, as the fulminate or [...]

  • A Simple Spark Detector for Alpha Particles

    Updated: 2011-09-17 22:38:47
Back in May, Explora!, the local science center for which I occasionally volunteer, referred me to the local public TV station to lead a weekend “Science Cafe”.  The discussion subject was lightning and its connection with cosmic rays.  Trying to augment my usual hands-on electrostatics program with something perhaps more topical, my mind wandered back [...]

  • Videos from my recent trip to Chernobyl

    Updated: 2011-09-17 21:15:43
Two videos from my most recent radioactive scavenger hunt in Ukraine’s Chernobyl exclusion zone are now on YouTube.  One features a pinhead-sized piece of spent nuclear fuel (pictured at left) that was carefully excavated from under about six inches of soil with the aid of a CDV-700 Geiger counter probe, taken back to our hotel [...]

  • Mass Transfer Hijinks

    Updated: 2011-09-16 01:37:51
Wow. Got a big reminder of some principles of  mass transfer the other day.  Kettle reactors have big limitations if your material won’t mix.  Even if your reaction is approximately diffusion limited, it is possible for things to go haywire if you can’t get it to move. A fellow knows this, but when confronted with it [...]

  • Stupid Tricks with LN2

    Updated: 2011-09-13 18:16:48
One of my favorite tricks with liquid nitrogen (LN2) was to pour some onto a chalk tray at the bottom of a chalk board. The skittering, madly boiling liquid would entrain the chalk dust from the tray and transport it to the end where it would plummet to the floor making that wonderful muffled popping [...]

  • Visiting Vogtle and Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plants

    Updated: 2011-09-07 06:45:22
The American South is widely seen as the most viable US market for new nuclear power plants.  Although the “nuclear renaissance” faces serious obstacles in the post-Fukushima world, if reactors are to be put on the grid then the South is almost certainly where it will happen first.  Dominion’s North Anna plant, which I visited [...]
